Ethernet is baseband Local Area Network with a bus topology, meaning that all the stations run off a common trunk cable. The trunk is a coaxial cable constructed to
allow data rates of 10 megabits per second over cable segment lengths of 1640 feet. |
A multi-conductor Transceiver cable is then used to connect the station to the trunk segment. The maximum trunk network lengths
within a bus network system spans 8200 feet with the use of repeaters and the properly designed cable. This supports a maximum number of stations per network of 1024. |
A thin, less expensive coaxial Ethernet RG58 coax cable also be utilized. Know as Thinnet or Cheapernet, this cable supports
fewer stations over shorter distances. |
